Retirement rules will undergo further changes in 2024, in accordance with the changes foreseen in the pension reform, approved by the government of former president Jair Bolsonaro, in 2019. From this year onwards, the minimum age to retire increases to 58 years and six months for women, and 63 years and six months for men.

To retire according to the minimum age transition rule, you must have:

• Women: 58 years and six months of age and 30 years of contribution
• Men: 63 years and six months of age and 35 years of contribution

The minimum age in this transition rule will rise by six months each year until it reaches 62 years for women, in 2031, and 65 years for men, in 2027.

The points rule also has changes. Last year, to retire through this type of transition, the sum of age and contribution time had to be 90 points for women and 100 points for men. This year, the sum should be 91 and 101, respectively.

By law, the score increases by one point each year until reaching 100 points for women, in 2033, and 105 points for men, by 2028.

In relation to INSS insured persons who met the retirement requirements according to last year’s transition rules, but who have not yet applied to the INSS, it is possible to retire according to the 2023 rules. These insured persons have acquired rights, that is, they cannot be affected by the changes.

The Pension Reform, implemented in 2019, introduced several significant changes, including the end of retirement based on contribution time, the imposition of a minimum age of 65 for men and 62 for women to retire, as well as the reduction in the value of death pensions. .

It also established minimum contribution times of 15 years for women and 20 for men in the private sector, and 20 years for both genders in the case of civil servants. During the 2022 election campaign, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) mentioned the possibility of a “revision” in social security legislation, indicating a possible re-examination of the reform’s provisions.

In October last year, the Minister of Social Security, Carlos Lupi, Lupi said that the National Social Security Council will be in charge of evaluating the changes made by the current reform, in order to present an alternative project.
