The US embassy in Brazil has changed the date for the readjustment in the price of issuing the American tourist visa (category B1/B2) to June 17th. The rate, which today is US$ 160 (R$ 799), will be US$ 185 (R$ 924), an increase of R$ 125, according to the current exchange rate.
According to the US government, which had previously announced the date of the change to take place this Tuesday (30), the readjustment seeks to balance revenues with the costs of care, whose demand “is recovering significantly faster than previously forecast” .
Other categories will also increase: temporary work documents (categories H, L, O, P, Q and R) will increase from US$ 190 (R$ 949) to US$ 205 (R$ 1,024), and investor visas (category E), from US$ 205 (R$ 1,024) to US$ 315 (R$ 1,573).
The increase occurs at a time when applicants face, in São Paulo, a period of 610 days for the first issue of a tourist visa. At American consulates located in other cities, the wait is slightly shorter: 493 days in Brasilia, 463 days in Rio de Janeiro and 449 days in Recife. Those who only need to renew a document that has already been granted take a shorter queue, of around 80 days in São Paulo.
Wait times can be consulted on the official website of the US Department of State.
Scheduling time began to increase more sharply as a direct effect of the Covid-19 pandemic, which impacted the functioning of diplomatic missions. In the period of more severe restrictions, the US stopped issuing non-emergency entry permits to foreigners.
Despite the current deadlines, the entity claims that these numbers are dynamic and that many tourists are able to advance the date of the interviews, at no additional cost, due to cancellations by other applicants and the opening of new opening hours. In addition, it is possible to request an anticipation of the interview in emergency cases, such as the death of immediate relatives and medical treatment.
