You can see: almost all colleges in the city of São Paulo have bars in their surroundings. The routine of classes, studies and exams stresses anyone, including young university students, who find in these establishments a space to relax and have fun with their colleagues.
But despite the similarities in terms of age and the offer of courses, each region of bars in the capital of São Paulo has its particularities, depending on the profile of the surrounding educational institutions. There are those more marked by beers from pubs for those who want to stop by after class and there are others even more incremented, with DJs and drink combinations.
In March, the month that marks the return to school, get to know the profiles of the main regions of university bars in the city.
PAULISTA AVENUE
It is common knowledge that Avenida Paulista is a corridor of culture and gastronomy, so students in the region have several options to unwind after school. There are those who prefer a snack bar that serves beers in long neck bottles and those who organize their own rolê and drink in front of a bar —which serves more as a drinks market than as a bar itself. These are the main meeting points, between Brigadeiro and Trianon Masp subway stations, where the students of Faculdade Cásper Líbero gather. At Consolação station, the parallel avenue Jaú concentrates groups coming mainly from Universidade Anhembi Morumbi. Over there, the bars accommodate their customers sitting, standing or in beach chairs.

NICE VIEW
One of the differentials among the bars around Avenida Nove de Julho and those of other regions is the way drinks are served. There, they don’t use plastic cups or so-called American ones. Beer is served in tulip-type glasses, which arrive chilled at young people’s tables at no additional cost. The other most requested drinks are the caipirinha, which can be made with cachaça, sake or vodka, and the PML, a drink that mixes pinga, honey and lemon. On Fridays, the number of people is so large that it prevents pedestrians from walking along the sidewalk and even takes up one of the lanes on the avenue. In addition to the songs chosen by customers, the venue hosts events in which members of university drums perform. At the end of the day, it is common to find Fundação Getúlio Vargas students still wearing the social clothes used during working hours in banks and offices of large companies.

The first meters of Avenida Valdemar Ferreira are marked by a setback in the sidewalk where no cars can pass. Those who circulate through the space are USP students, whose university town is nearby, dividing themselves between tables and chairs made of wood or plastic — the color and material serve to differentiate the space of each of the three bars in the area. On busy days, most leave their seats and enjoy standing beers, caipirinhas or PMLs. The music that plays is at the discretion of those who frequent the space, which is reflected in a mix of rhythms with no apparent connection. In clothing, young people tend to opt for looser pieces, with some wearing the clothes they wore in sports training shortly before going to the bar.

Less than a hundred meters separate two bars on Rua Maria Antônia, in the Consolação area, but the entire stretch is occupied by young people from Universidade Presbiteriana Mackenzie on certain days of the week. With more students than the capacity of the tables can hold, they are divided, standing, on both sides of the street. In addition to the sound systems in the spaces, some young people put their own music on boxes or in cars. Pagoda groups also play in bars sporadically. Another street frequented by students, Maria Borba, follows a similar line, with a large concentration of young people, but not all university students.

The region that concentrates the greatest diversity of options when it comes to university bars seems to be the neighborhood on the east side. The final block on Rua Bresser is one of the most frequented by students from São Judas and Anhembi Morumbi universities. There you can find pool tables and hookah rentals in practically all establishments. In addition to the traditional liters of beer, drinks that mix vodka and energy are quite popular. Just over a kilometer away, students also fill the tables and sidewalks of the bars on Rua Conselheiro Lafaiette. As in the other spaces, drinks and electronic cigarettes are accompanied by music chosen by customers. The look of those who circulate through the region is also different from that found in bars in other regions, with many predominating tight-fitting clothes and clothes with the names of the courses and colleges attended.

In bars with few tables, young people from PUC are divided into typical bar chairs, sofas and around pool tables. Those who drink in the region can opt for beers or drinks with different combinations. There are those who prefer gin and energy mixes and those who choose flavored vodkas with powdered juices, both served in plastic cups. The drink that has lemon flavored vodka, vanilla flavored juice and ice made with coconut water is known as Chevette. The choice of music, as is common in student bars, is up to those who frequent the space. The most heard rhythms there are funk and rap.

The bars there are frequented by university students from ESPM, Belas Artes and Fapcom. In addition to the traditional beers, some of the places serve craft beer and gin and tonics in plastic cups.
