Unifesp study seeks to map adults with autism – 09/28/2023 – Health

Researchers from Unifesp (Federal University of São Paulo) began a study to profile adults with autism in Brazil and map their needs and challenges.

Considering international prevalence data, it is estimated that the country has around 3 million adults, but there is a lack of information about this population and research by TEAMM (Ambulatório de Cognição Social Marcos Mercadante) attempts to fill part of the gap.

“Today, we have wide dissemination of the clinical picture and therapies for the care of autistic children, however research and treatments, both medicinal and therapeutic, are quite scarce when it comes to adult life”, says Daniela Bordini, coordinator of TEAMM.

To reach as many people as possible in all regions of Brazil, the group made the survey questionnaire available on the internet. The page also contains the consent form, in which the researchers clarify doubts about the study and reaffirm that the identity of the participants will not be disclosed.

The questionnaire is made up of questions in an alternative format and covers treatment and diagnosis, school life, professional life, socialization and expectations. The average completion time is 15 minutes and adults with autism, family members and caregivers can participate.

“We believe that, with our research, we will better understand the real situation of this population and their needs. This way, we will be able to collaborate with the design of service proposals, housing, inclusion in technical schools, universities and the job market, as well as with the training of professionals who work directly with this public”, says Bordini.
