Under pressure, Minister Cristiano Zanin, of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), made a point of explaining his recent votes, criticized by progressive sectors of society and by members of the PT. According to sources interviewed by the blog, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has been telling people close to him that he will not interfere or charge Zanin. The president attributes the criticism against the minister to a supposed campaign against the possible appointment of the attorney general of the Union, Jorge Messias, for the vacancy of minister Rosa Weber in the STF. The minister retires in September. In this context, criticism of Zanin, appointed by Lula in June, would be a way of pressing for a more progressive name in the next presidential nomination. A demonstration that the PT and the left were engaged in the campaign for the new name that Lula will choose for the Supreme Court was the strong presence of ministers and politicians at the launch, this Tuesday (29), of a book by the president of the Federal Court of Accounts (TCU), Bruno Dantas. Dantas and Messias are currently considered the strongest competitors for the vacancy, despite the pressure for Lula to nominate a woman. Zanin’s explanations One of the votes explained by Zanin was in the case in which the STF decided to consider acts of homophobia and transphobia as a crime of racial injury. Zanin voted against this understanding. He explained that it is the Legislature that needs to make this decision, not the Judiciary. Another lawsuit was about the application of the principle of insignificance, for the theft of a man convicted of stealing items valued at R$ 100. Zanin upheld the conviction. The minister argues that the judge was a repeat offender and that a firearm was used in the crime.
