Behold, the world was caught on the wrong foot with the news of the possible bankruptcy of Tupperware – for those who do not link the name to the appearance, the brand that popularized plastic pots to store and forget food leftovers in the fridge.
Personally, I have only recently come across a genuine Tupperware tapué. As is known, tapué is the generic container: everything that is located between the pyrex (which is made of glass) and the ice cream/margarine container.
Tupperware was notable for a sales scheme that, being so archaic, is astonishing that it lasted into the 21st century. .
Of course, Tupperware has opened up other sales channels, such as e-commerce, but its image will always be related to ladies’ meetings at one of their homes, to learn about and promote the brand’s novelties. Something tremendously bizarre, if not inconceivable, in a society with gender equality.
While I lived with her, my mother never had a Tupperware tapué. Maybe because she worked outside. Maybe because she didn’t know anyone from the clique (little?) of sales. Maybe because she was a, um, thrifty person and preferred reusing packaging.
Like most mothers, by the way.
The tapué is a magical object. Lids disappear and multiply in the closet, with only one immutable rule: there will be no pairs of pot and lid. The borrowed pots with leftover cake never return, but an unknown tapué always appears at home to make up for what is missing.
Tupperware may end, but it left an indelible mark on Brazilian society. Here, the tapué culture is eternal.
