‘Transformers: The Awakening of the Beasts’ has good news, but the franchise loses strength; g1 already seen

The seventh film in the saga introduces characters from the animated series ‘Beast Wars’, a success in several countries, including Brazil. Steven Caple Jr., from ‘Creed II’, takes over the direction. The saga of giant robots that disguise themselves as vehicles has found a way to remain relevant amid so many blockbusters. “Transformers: Awakening of the Beasts”, which opens in theaters this Thursday (8), achieves the feat of being superior to previous sequels, all directed by Michael Bay. It just doesn’t surpass the original film, commanded by Bay, nor the long predecessor, “Bumblebee” (2018), still the best in the franchise. The film gains points with the addition of new characters, both human and robotic, good special effects and a better defined story, which gives a certain freshness to the series. However, slips prevent the result from being more satisfactory. Watch the trailer for the movie “Transformers: Awakening of the Beasts” Set in 1994, seven years after the events of “Bumblebee”, the plot is centered on Noah Diaz (Anthony Ramos, from “A Star Is Born” and “Hamilton”), an unemployed ex-military man who decides to steal a car to pay for treatment for his sick brother, Kris (Dean Scott Vazquez, from “In a New York City”). He didn’t imagine that the chosen vehicle is, in fact, an Autobot called Mirage (voiced by Pete Davison, from “Fast and Furious 10”). Thus, Diaz meets the other Autobots, led by Optimus Prime (voiced by Peter Cullen), and finds himself in a dispute between his new friends and the Predacons, commanded by the Terrorcon Scourge (voiced by Peter Dinklage, Tyrion from “Game of Thrones”. “). The two groups fight over an artifact that could either take them back to their home planet of Cybertron or destroy worlds. To prevent Earth from being destroyed, Díaz teams up with the Autobots and researcher Elena Wallace (Dominique Fishback, from “Judas and the Black Messiah”), who can help find the artifact before the villains. To everyone’s surprise, the group discovers in Peru a new team of Transformers, the Maximals, who have the appearance of animals, and are led by Optimus Primal (voice of Ron Pearlman, from “Hellboy”). The team includes Airazor (Michelle Yeoh, “Everything and Everywhere at Once”), Cheetor (Tongayi Chirisa, “I, Zombie”) and Rhinox (David Sobolov, “Bumblebee”). The Autobots form an alliance with the Maximals to defeat the Predacons and prevent the worst from happening for everyone. Optimus Primal (voiced by Ron Perlman) is the leader of the Maximals in the movie ‘Transformers: Awakening of the Beasts’ that appeared in the animated series of the 1990s, “Beast Wars”, which was successful in several parts of the world, including Brazil. The metallic beings that have appearances that resemble animals like gorillas, eagles, cheetahs and rhinos have been updated with good design and efficient computer graphics, with interesting details, such as textures that mix fur and feathers with metallic elements. The idea sounds convincing and matches the proposal already shown with the already established Autobots, which are “revamped” with an older appearance and more reminiscent of the classic designs of the characters. In his first project involving complex visual effects, the director showed he had control over the material at hand. The new director directs sequences that, if not creative, are at least easy to follow by the public, without confusion, which did not happen with the ones directed by Michael Bay, generally too chaotic and explosive. The final confrontation, for example, is very well executed. Additionally, Cape Jr. he hits the scenes where he needs to create an environment of the time in which the film takes place. Thus, the setting of the 90s that is seen in the feature sounds convincing, especially in the sequences in Brooklyn, thanks also to the producers, who managed to get vehicles and objects that are no longer seen in the current period. At times, it is curious to note the slightly less fanciful and more “down to earth” tone. Metallic emotion Bumblebee and Cheetor come into action in a scene from ‘Transformers: Awakening of the Beasts’ Disclosure However, the filmmaker makes some slips, as in the scene where the Transformers walk over houses in Peru and, as they are heavy beings, they should leave marks on the roofs, which does not happen. Also, while more time to develop Noah and Elena in the film is commendable, Caple Jr. it can’t escape the fussiness in some sequences. A good example of this are the scenes that show the relationship between the protagonist and his younger brother (and, later, Mirage), full of declarations worthy of a very basic self-help book, especially in the final part of the film. The feature lacks something that arouses genuine emotion, that makes the viewer care more about the characters. In that regard, “Bumblebee” leaves the movie in the dust. The fault of this comes from the script written by ten hands (!!!), which fails to create a good balance between fun and emotion, and ends up delivering more of the same, especially from the middle to the end. To make matters worse, while the text isn’t as tangled as it is in Bay’s films, it’s also not as creative as it could be. Mirage (voiced by Pete Davison/Douglas Silva) is one of the highlights of ‘Transformers: The awakening of the beasts’ Disclosure The humor is also weak. Just note that the script is not always able to make good jokes for the characters, especially Mirage, which sometimes sounds boring and tiring, even with the effort of Pete Davison (and Douglas Silva in the Portuguese version) to make it more funny. It should please fans of previous productions, especially those who just want to see cars that have become robots fighting amidst many explosions. As it stands, it’s watchable without major issues, which is a relief compared to what’s been released before. But it could yield more. Anthony Ramos lends more weight to playing Noah and doesn’t sound as silly as Shia LeBeouf or even Mark Wahlberg (who is remembered through a mid-film joke) in his interaction with the Transformers. Dominique Fishback, unlike previous protagonists like Megan Fox or Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, actually has more to do than run around or scream for help. The actress convinces as a researcher and performs well in scenes that need to show her intelligence to solve problems. Mirage (voiced by Douglas Silva in the Portuguese version) in the movie ‘Transformers: The Awakening of the Beasts’ Disclosure Among the voice actors, it is worth mentioning the work of Oscar winner for Best Actress Michelle Yeoh as Airazor, in addition to Ron Perlman as Optimus Primal, Cristo Fernández as Wheeljack and Peter Dinklage as the villainous Scourge. The film’s greatest threat, the leader of the Predacons Unicron, a Decepticon capable of destroying entire planets (who looks like a metallic version of Galactus from “Fantastic Four and the Silver Surfer”), is voiced in the original by Colman Domingo (from “Hamilton” ) correctly, without being striking. In the end, “Transformers: Rise of the Beasts” even fulfills its goal of maintaining interest in the franchise for new films in the series, especially if it inserts new elements and characters from its mythology (something what should happen, as the two post-credits scenes suggest). The feature should rekindle the fascination that many have for the alien robots that came from Hasbro toys. It just needs to be more memorable. As the best adventures in cinema are.
