Tony Awards 2023: how to see the nominated Broadway plays – 05/13/2023 – Tourism

In June of this year, New York will host the 76th edition of the Tony Awards, one of the most prestigious theatrical awards in the United States. Last Tuesday (2), the nominations for the 2023 celebration were announced.

There were 38 shows competing for a place at the ceremony, which will be held at the United Palace Theater. Broadway’s “Some Like It Hot” leads the nominations with 13 in total.

“Some Like It Hot”
Musical comedy based on the famous 1959 film of the same name. The story follows two unemployed musicians who witness a murder and disguise themselves as women to escape the mafia. The piece features vibrant musical numbers and elaborate choreography, as well as exploring themes of gender identity and unrequited love. Among the nominations, the best musical competes.

“& Juliet”
Up for nine awards, it’s a musical comedy that reimagines the story of William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, starting from the moment Juliet decides not to kill herself and instead embarks on a journey of self-discovery and independence. The piece features pop musical numbers such as “Baby One More Time” by Britney Spears and “Roar” by Katy Perry, and addresses themes such as love, freedom and gender equality.

“New York, New York”
Also with nine nominations, the show is based on the song of the same name, which celebrates New York City in all its glory and courage. The musical uses dance to talk about two young musicians in search of success and love in a post-war city.

“Shucked”
A pun-laden country comedy about a rural community facing a corn crisis. It has nine nominations, including best musical and best supporting actor, for Kevin Cahoon.

“Kimberly Akimbo”
Play written by David Lindsay-Abaire. The story follows a 16-year-old pregnant teenager who suffers from a rare disease of premature aging. While dealing with her pregnancy, she also has to deal with the eccentricities of her dysfunctional family, including an alcoholic mother and a criminal father. The play addresses themes such as family, mortality and identity. It was nominated for best musical and eight other awards.

“Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street”
The story follows Sweeney Todd, an unjustly exiled barber who returns to London with a thirst for revenge. With the help of a pie shop owner, he begins to murder his customers and supply them as filling for pies. The play is known for its unique combination of horror, comedy and music. It has won the Tony Award for Best Musical and several other Broadway awards. It has eight nominations.

“A Doll’s House”
Drama that tells the story of Nora Helmer, a woman who lives in an unhappy marriage and controlled by her husband. When a secret from her past is revealed, she decides to fight for her independence and face the consequences of her choices. The play is a social critique that addresses themes such as gender, power and individual freedom. It has six nominations.

“Leopoldstadt”
It tells the story of a Jewish family in Vienna at the beginning of the 20th century, experiencing the height of prosperity and the decline of their culture and identity during the rise of Nazism in Europe. The play explores themes such as identity, religion, history and belonging, and was written by Tom Stoppard. It competes for six awards, including best theater play.

“parade”
Musical based on true events that took place in 1913 in Atlanta, Georgia. The story follows Leo Frank, the Jewish factory manager who is wrongfully accused and convicted of the murder of a 13-year-old girl. The musical depicts her struggle to prove her innocence, while facing prejudice and bigotry from a deeply segregated and racist community. It has six nominations.

“Fat Ham”
Comical and contemporary reinterpretation of Shakespeare’s play “Hamlet”, which explores themes such as race, masculinity and homosexuality. The story takes place at a university in Philadelphia, where the characters are black theater students. The play reimagines the relationships and conflicts of Hamlet’s characters from the perspective of a black community, with a new approach and discussion of important current issues. It has five nominations.
