‘This hair is not from the period”

Juliana Alves is excited about Wanda, her character in “Perfect Love”, the next six o’clock soap opera. And to play a modern woman, with a cosmopolitan spirit, in a period serial, she adhered to an unprecedented look in the life of the actress herself: the twist.

— I’ve even received a comment on my Instagram like this: “But that hair isn’t from the period”. And I said: “That’s it” (laughs). The hairstyle is from the period, but the soap opera also allows itself to make some provocations. Within the story, which is apparently traditional, there are many things that make us reflect and leave the box. So it’s really cool because we have curly hair textures, which is super possible for the time as well. And Wanda is there hacking this system – says Juliana.

One of the authors of the novel, Elísio Lopes Jr. complements:

“The braids have always been there. I have pictures of my grandmother in the 1940s with her bun and braid. It is important for us to step on this ground and understand that not all women should have straightened their hair in the 40s, it was not a simple thing. Brazil had its roots and we are not inventing this country. We are proposing that he comes to the screen along with this story. It will change the prism a little bit, but we are talking about the truth.

The character of Juliana in the serial, owns the store “A Brasileira Elegante”, which offers, among its articles, feminine products “daring” for the rural mentality of the time, such as tops, long pants and pantsuits. Clothes that she herself does not shy away from wearing, even causing a shock among the most conservative figures in the city, such as Mayor Anselmo Evaristo (Paulo Betti).

For the plot, the authors carried out extensive iconographic research on the black population in Brazil in past decades, “a black elite that always existed in Brazil and that was erased”, says Duca Rachid, also the author of the novel. This reality will be retrieved and portrayed in the serial.

— We discovered incredible things that are hidden, photos of clubs, where people had this look and we are trying to rescue them for the soap opera as well. This affected our work a lot, not only aesthetically, but in terms of content. We are not inventing anything, but showing that it already existed, it always existed. This is very important – explains Duca

And Juliana celebrates:

— It is a completely different period soap opera from what has already been seen. If it proposes, it does not refuse to show a Brazil that was denied us in other plots of the time that were successful. We know that there are some layers in this society that were omitted by the very construction of Brazil, by this structure of power and visibility that we have. It’s really cool to see Wanda enterprising in high society, putting herself forward, and seeing the possibility of culturally expressing this black culture visually as well, in addition to affection.

The characterization, reinforces the actress, has an important role for her character in “Perfect love”. The way Wanda dresses reflects the woman ahead of her time that she is. On social networks, Juliana showed the hair maintenance process and praised:
