Maurício Moura reiterated that Pix is not a government project
Brasilia DF) – The Director of Relationship, Citizenship and Conduct Supervision of the Central Bank (BC), Mauricio Moura, said this Monday (12), in BC’s second weekly live that there is no plan to end the Pix instant payment system, nor there are studies to tax these operations. The director also stated that Pix is an example of financial inclusion.
Moura reiterated that Pix is not a government project, but a service developed by BC that integrated 45 million Brazilians to electronic transactions. “The Pix is a heritage of Brazilians”, he said.
The theme of BC’s second live was inclusion and financial education.
The director also reiterated that financial inclusion indicators must be monitored and also reflect on bank competition. He praised the level of financial inclusion in the country and recalled that almost the entire Brazilian adult population currently has bank accounts.
With regard to financial education, Moura reiterated that it is possible to advance on the subject and highlighted BC’s Learning Value program, developed with students from the public school system. He also warned of scams with the Values Receivable System (SVR) and reiterated that neither BC nor banks request data, such as passwords, from customers.
international reservations
The director also said that the strategy for managing international reserves is not revealed, when responding to a question about the amount of gold in the composition of reserves during the weekly live of the municipality.
Moura justified that revealing details of the management strategy, such as purchases or sales of gold and currencies, could result in “not so good” business for the BC, whose objective is to protect the reserves, a strategic asset of the country.
inflation targets
The director also explained that the decision not to address inflation, targeting and market expectations in the BC’s second live was due to the proximity to the Monetary Policy Committee (Copom) meeting.
As the Copom will meet next week, on the 20th and 21st of June, Moura justified that it would not be appropriate to deal with the issue of inflation this week, even though the period of silence has not yet started.
The Copom quiet period begins on the Wednesday of the week prior to the meeting and runs until the release of the minutes, on the Tuesday following the meeting.
