The winning images of the insect photo contest – 06/19/2023 – Science

A photo of a couple of flies (Eutolmus rufibarbis) mating, entitled It Takes Two, by Pete Burford of Shrewsbury, UK, was the overall winner of the Royal Entomological Society’s Insect Week photo competition.
The annual amateur competition received more than 700 entries from 34 countries — and a total of 24 images were awarded.
Burford began venturing into the world of macro photography during the lockdown imposed by the Covid-19 pandemic, and publishes his work on Instagram and TikTok.
Gustav Parenmark, 16, from Sweden, won the under-18 category with his photo of a blue-tailed damselfly, titled Fresh Out Of The Shower.
“Each year this contest gets harder to judge because the standard of amateur insect photography keeps improving,” said Tim Cockerill, a professor at the University of Falmouth in the UK who is the competition’s head judge.
“Interest in insects, in all their fascinating glory, is increasing as we begin to better understand the role insects play in our lives and the role humans must play in theirs.”
A photo of a hummingbird sphinx moth, captured by Marc Brouwer, took second place in the 18+ category.
Organized by the Royal Entomological Society, Insect Week runs from 19th to 25th June. Registration for the next edition of the contest is now open — details are on the competition website.
