The white flag signals between Campos Neto and Lula

Signals sent from both sides, this Monday (13), indicate a rapprochement movement and a “white flag” extended between the president of the Central Bank, Roberto Campos Neto, and president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT). Members of the government’s economic area saw gestures of peace and a conciliatory tone with the Lula administration in the interview given by the president of BC to the program Roda Viva, on TV Cultura, on Monday night. Campos Neto sent several messages that were well received: he explained his participation in a group of messages from Jair Bolsonaro’s ministers as “technical help”, he made a mea culpa for having gone to vote in the 2022 elections dressed in a yellow-green shirt – practically a uniform of Bolsonaro supporters –, stating that it did not help in a moment of polarization in the country; and, even stronger, he said he was willing to meet President Lula to explain the interest rate and stated that the election cannot be questioned. The messages, according to members of the government, were of peace. On the other hand, Lula was at a PT event and, if the PT’s president, Gleisi Hoffmann, strongly criticized the policy of high interest rates, there was no attack by Lula. The President of the Republic preferred to look ahead. Roberto Campos Neto denies political action in the presidency of the Central Bank Inflation target In the interview, Campos Neto said that changing the inflation target reduces the flexibility of the Central Bank. Even so, he said that it is up to the Minister of Finance, Fernando Haddad, to propose the discussion of the change. The rule of the National Monetary Council, in fact, determines that this discussion has to be guided by the president of the CMN, who is Haddad. By the way, praise for Haddad did not go unnoticed by the government’s radar. Campos Neto also stated that, if there is a proposal to change the target, he will discuss it with the other members of the Copom, the Monetary Policy Council.
