Since the aircraft carriers Shandong and Nimitz threatened each other off the island’s coast, as Ziyou Shibao (Liberty Times) and others have shown, coverage in the United States and even Taiwan is of escalation to war with China.

In Bloomberg, for example, last week, “Taiwan will buy 400 US missiles”, produced by Boeing, to be used against China, “according to people familiar with the matter”.

“China and the US will be superpowers as long as their children live,” he told the financial channel’s interviewer. “And they will always compete with each other. And they must [competir]. But you can’t let this get out of hand. You can’t have an accident.”

The Taiwanese government itself, according to Bloomberg, “quietly asked the US to calm the rhetoric”, citing Buffett and congressmen, but saying it was “particularly dissatisfied with the Secretary of Commerce [de Joe Biden]who called America’s reliance on Taiwanese chips unsustainable”.

Then, as noted by the Washington Examiner, the commander of US forces in Asia rejected 2027 or any date for a war, speaking to Congress – which was welcomed by experts fearful of the growing “speculation”, case of Ryan Hassby Brookings.

Among other moves to calm the rhetoric, the US Treasury Secretary defended resuming the “constructive” relationship with China, saying that decoupling would be “disastrous”, in the FT headline.

However, going into the weekend, the Taiwanese foreign minister gave an interview to London radio LBC, highlighted by newspapers such as The Guardian, in which he resumed the projection of war and defended that it is in the British interest to support the island: “2027 is the year”.

At the same time, local websites such as Taiwan News reported the arrival of 200 US military personnel for “training”, confirming a previous publication by the Wall Street Journal.

And Washington-funded Radio Free Asia reports that presidential hopefuls John Bolton, Mike Pence and Glen Youngkin are due to visit the island separately in the coming weeks.
