The atmosphere extends throughout the film. The uninspired villain, with generic powers and tired motivations (especially for the MCU), prevents the level of fighting from growing, even with the physical chemistry of the protagonists. The script written by director Nia DaCosta (“The Legend of Candyman”), Elissa Karasik (“Loki”) and Megan McDonnell (“Wandavision”) makes brief attempts to evolve Monica and Carol, separated by decades, but the Captain maintains one of the most unstable behaviors in the studio’s gigantic pantheon. At one point, she is serious and doesn’t want partnerships. In the next, she sings and dances while casually admitting to being royalty on a distant planet. It would be important to give a little more consistency to one of the most powerful heroines in the universe. The music scene, at least, is one of the few glimpses of boldness. With beautiful colors and a delightfully lame excuse for its existence, it could raise the bar a bit for Marvel, known for more juvenile humor. It won’t, but it could.
