The Minister of Social Security, Carlos Lupi, stated this Wednesday (3) that the queue at the National Social Security Institute (INSS) “will never end”. Lupi said the goal this year is to reduce waiting times to 30 days. The legal deadline for analyzing benefits is 45 days. According to the minister, the wait is currently 49 days.
“Anyone who says the queue will end is a liar. Every month, 900 thousand requests come in, 1 million new requests, so every month there will be at least 900 thousand, 1 million people asking, and no one solves it like that. You have to check the document, it has to be fair”, highlighted Lupi. “I want, in the year 2024, to reach the 30-day waiting date for the benefit to be completed. What you mean? That in the same month that the person files in, they complete the process,” he added.
Until October, the INSS queue had around 1.6 million people awaiting analysis of requests for medical expertise and administrative pending issues. The minister stated that at the beginning of the Lula government the waiting time was 97 days. The National Association of Medical Experts (ANMP) criticized the failure to fulfill the promise made by Lupi about clearing the INSS queue by the end of 2023.
This Wednesday (3), the minister said that he never talked about completely eliminating the queue, but reducing the wait to the deadline set by law, of 45 days. In a note, the ANMP pointed out that the wait for assistance by the INSS is expected to reach 2 million pending applications this year, with no public budget to cover the expenses of the demand.
