Telecoms want to facilitate network connections for companies – 02/28/2023 – Tech

Telecommunications companies have launched a series of services that will allow other companies direct access to functionality and data from the telephony networks to programmers.
The initiative, called “open gateway” was announced this Monday (27) at the Mobile World Congress, a technology event taking place this week in Barcelona. The partnership was guided by the GSMA, the entity that brings together the teles and organizes the event.
This is the availability of APIs (acronym in English for application programming interface), channels that allow communication between computer systems, to enable direct connection with network services.
Initially, the service will be offered by a consortium of 21 companies, which include América Móvil (owner of Claro), Telefónica (Vivo) and Tim.
These APIs are already being used by operators themselves to improve connections between them. Eight services have already been launched, which include, for example, solutions for autonomous vehicles, to combat chip cloning, to know if a phone is roaming, or to locate a device. New options will be released in the future.
Now, other companies could apply systems to work directly with these functions. In practice, teles also expect better connectivity that would allow, for example, to make a show with musicians playing from different locations.
“Developers can use the technology once for identity, cybersecurity or billing services, with the potential to integrate with all operators worldwide [de uma vez]”, says Mats Granryd, Director General of the GSMA.
The idea represents a new business front for telecom companies, comes at a time when the sector complains of flat revenue, while the demand for data traffic and investments, with 5G, take off.
At the opening of the event, this Monday, representatives of the telephony sector cited the technological transformations expected for the next few years to ask for the so-called “fair sharing” in investments made in the network with large technology companies. That is, share part of the costs with the platforms.
