Tanac invests BRL 100 million to increase production in Rio Grande by 80%

With an eye on the European and Asian markets, Tanac plans to expand this year by 80% of its wood chip production capacity at the unit located in Rio Grande. It will be the main result of the R$ 100 million contribution made this year in the company’s operations in the State.
According to the CEO of Tanac, João Carlos Soares, today the unit produces, on average, 1.2 million square meters of chips per year, and will increase to more than 2 million. The entire product is exported from the Port of Rio Grande.

“We are in a moment of increased demand, especially in Asia and Europe, for raw material for the cellulose industry, and we still have a growing share in the foreign market for biomass, as an alternative for the decarbonization of industrial activities worldwide “, explains the director.

The forest at the base of production

The investment is part of the BRL 300 million plan over five years, announced by Tanac in 2022. Last year, another BRL 80 million was invested. And if the contribution is reflected in greater industrial productivity, the company’s attention is focused on the origin of this product. All material processed at Tanac’s industrial units originates from the company’s forests, all planted in Rio Grande do Sul. The company is considered the largest producer of black wattle in the world, with 55 million trees planted, which make Tanac also a world leader in the production of plant extracts, chips and pellets from acacia.

There will be R$ 60 million invested, within the five-year plan, in forestry operations alone. And to ensure better production management, a new administrative headquarters was inaugurated at the beginning of this year, in Pelotas. The site, on the banks of the BR-116, now centralizes forestry, harvesting, forestry planning, workshop, maintenance and logistics activities.

The goal, points out the company, is to increase the area planted with black wattle _ and a smaller portion of eucalyptus _ by 7 thousand hectares per year. The structure, which absorbed the former regional offices that were maintained in three nearby municipalities, has 100 employees. Altogether, Tanac’s operations employ 1,400 people.

Currently, the raw material for Tanac’s production comes from plantations in 21 municipalities. Most in the southern half of the state. Only between Encruzilhada do Sul, Cristal and Bagé, there are more than 80 planted forests, in a universe of 25 thousand hectares managed by Tanac in Rio Grande do Sul. Today, Tanac is a “carbon negative” company, retaining seven times more CO2 from the atmosphere than it emits in its entire operation.

Acacia extract is potentiated

In 2022, the company announced a partnership with Banco do Brasil offering benefits to farmers who want to manage black wattle on their properties. The result, guarantees the director, has been very positive.

“The planting of acacia is very advantageous for the rural producer, because he has important gains not only with the log, but also with the bark, with a lot of added value”, explains João Soares.

The environment in Rio Grande do Sul is considered one of the best in the world for planting black wattle. And if the logs originate the products processed in Rio Grande since 1995, the bark is destined for Montenegro, in the tannin processing operation, which gave rise to Tanac, in 1948. At the time, the main destination was the leather industry, but today the product is intended for almost every type of industry, from effluent and water treatment to wine correction.

And the potential, believes the director of Tanac, has not yet been fully exploited. Therefore, the company allocates R$ 5 million in tannin research and development.
“We want to understand even better the market and the functionality of this product, which is increasingly demanded”, he points out.

Among the potentials that have been researched are the use of tannin at the base of poultry and pork production, and in supplying the fertilizer industry, which has in the State one of the most important productive poles in the country.
