Students from the state network produce videos about classics of pre-modernist literature

Manaus (AM) – At the Centro Educacional de Tempo Integral (Ceti) Áurea Pinheiro Braga, located in the west zone of Manaus, the finalist students of the institution carried out the activity “Why should I read this work?”, an initiative that encouraged students to read classics of preschool literature. -modernist.

Under the guidance of the Portuguese language teacher, from the 3rd grade of high school, Márcia Sicsu, the students read and produced videos on the importance of literary works. This is the second time that the teacher has carried out the activity at the school. The first edition took place in 2021, remotely, due to the health restrictions imposed by the Covid-19 pandemic.

“I always work in a playful way with my students, I like it when they learn with pleasure. Reading classics can sometimes seem boring, but when we think of an attractive dynamic, that changes”, explained the teacher.

Among the national works chosen by the teacher to carry out the work are: “Sad end of Policarpo Quaresma”, by Lima Barreto; “Urupês and Dead Cities”, by Monteiro Lobato; “Eu”, by Augusto dos Anjos; “Os Sertões”, Euclides da Cunha and “Canaã”, by Graça Aranha.

Student participation

The 130 students from the four 3rd grade classes at Ceti Áurea Pinheiro Braga engaged in the proposed activity. Among readers, presenters and editors, students proposed reflections on the books read.

“The work I read (Canaã) still represents a lot of today, even if it takes place far from our current situation. These books should be more encouraged, as they discuss racism, prejudice and, if we delve deeper into these subjects, we can have a different world view”, said Saimon Cardoso, 17 years old.

Student Izabelly Cantalice, 16, who read the book “Sad end of Policarpo Quaresma”, spoke about how the successful dynamic changed her reading experience.

“I loved doing this job, because I love to read and I like to explain what I understand. In the book, the writer criticizes the society of the time, so the work is important for us to reflect on the country in which we live. It gave me a sense that I can change things in my life and contribute to society.”

The multidisciplinarity of the action was also a prominent topic for the school. According to the unit’s manager, Francisca Mourão, bringing technology into the students’ school routine is an important step in their teaching and learning process.

“The school needs to take ownership of the technological tools that most students know how to handle, such as cell phones and tablets, and use them as a learning resource. In this way, we further increase the knowledge capacity of students,” she stressed.

The next initiative is already being planned by Professor Márcia Sicsú. Students will, in the following evaluative activities, carry out a study on modernist authors.

After the research activity, the students will assemble an interview script and carry it out in the classroom. Students will also characterize themselves, interpreting the chosen authors.
