State attorneys general make racial diagnosis – 04/20/2023 – Panel SA

While movements against historic racial inequality advance at the top of the Judiciary, calling for the choice of a black woman for the seat of the STF, the attorney generals of all states are preparing a diagnosis of diversity in public law in the country.
The survey, which began last month, should be presented at the end of the year at the congress of prosecutors, in Santa Catarina, according to Inês Coimbra, attorney general for the state of São Paulo.
She claims that the meetings for structuring and collecting data have already started, but not all states have yet committed themselves to nominating a representative for the job.
“It is important for society to understand who the actors of the entire Justice system are, that is, who are the people, what is the focus, who works to bring about social peace in such a heterogeneous society. It reflects the society for which are they working?”, says Coimbra, who, upon being appointed in 2022, was the first black person to command the São Paulo State Attorney General’s Office (PGE) in the nearly 75 years of the institution’s existence.
Coimbra considers that it should be an obligation for all institutions to provide transparency in the diagnosis of diversity. “You need to enter an institution’s website and be able to find out who these people are,” he says.
