Spotted fever gave dentist a symptom 1 week after party – 06/14/2023 – Health

The first confirmation from Instituto Adolfo Lutz for Rocky Mountain spotted fever this month was the case of dentist Mariana Giordano, 36.

She died on June 8, the same day that her boyfriend, pilot and businessman Douglas Pereira Costa, 42, also a victim of spotted fever, died.

On May 27, the couple was at Feijoada do Rosa, at Fazenda Santa Margarida, in Joaquim Egídio, district of Campinas (93 km from SP), the likely site of the infection. The following week, they traveled to Monte Verde (MG).

The symptoms started on June 3rd, a Saturday. In addition to fever, pain and spots all over her body, Mariana complained of tiredness, says her brother, businessman Marcelo Giordano, 46.

“On Saturday, she and Douglas couldn’t leave the room,” she says. According to him, Mariana had bites on her shoulder and leg, with a bruise.

On Sunday, Mariana went to Hospital Vitória, in São Paulo, where she lived.

“She took a load of adrenaline and came back fine. She said she was fine. On Monday, she went to the college to present a TCC for a course she was finishing. At night, she started feeling very bad. She went back to the hospital, had a battery of tests and was hospitalized. On Tuesday, they transferred her to the ICU. She died on Thursday. Douglas died at noon, and she, at 4 pm”, reports the businessman.

“My sister only studied her whole life. She never drank, smoked or used drugs. We have to alert the population, people have no idea of ​​the danger of this disease”, says Giordano.

The Campinas Municipal Health Department is already treating the situation as an outbreak of spotted fever. The district of Joaquim Egídio is mapped as a risk area for the disease. According to the city hall, the farm will only be able to hold new events when it presents an environmental and communication contingency plan.

Douglas Costa was treated at a private hospital in Jundiaí (58 km from SP), where he lived, with the same symptoms as his girlfriend.

“Douglas stayed at home during this period. He only went to the hospital on Wednesday [7]. He was admitted and they took him to the ICU, at night they intubated him and on Thursday he passed away “, says Giordano.
