The Government of São Paulo announced this Monday (3) a campaign for heart surgeries to streamline the queue of patients awaiting procedures at the SUS. The initiative tries to resolve the situation of the large queues in the state.
The announcement was made at the Instituto Dante Pazzanese de Cardiologia. According to the Secretary of Health, Eleuses Paiva, around 3,000 surgeries will be performed on valves, revascularization and cardiac complications. “The objective is to reduce the waiting list for elective surgeries”, he summarized.
The expectation is that the program will start immediately and take place over the second half of the year, until reaching the goal of performing 3,000 procedures.
The long waiting list for surgeries at SUS in São Paulo is a challenge that the government is trying to overcome. Recently, health management announced a regionalization plan that aims to better structure the provision of services between municipalities. There is also an action that tries to unify the queues in order to have a clear idea of how many people are waiting for a procedure.
In addition, the state governor, Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicans), stated that the investment of funds is essential to deal with the problems. “We need to fight the underfunding of health care,” he declared.
In total, Paiva said that around R$ 150 million will be invested in the cardiac surgery program. Even though the federal government has recently announced a budget to speed up elective procedures in the SUS, all funds for the mutirão in São Paulo will come from the state.
At the national level, the situation is also critical, with more than 1 million procedures waiting to be performed. According to data released by the Ministry of Health, São Paulo is the second state with the longest queue in the entire country for operations: there are about 111 million people waiting for a procedure.
The São Paulo government also hopes to carry out other joint efforts in the coming months, such as one focused on orthopedic surgeries.
