The announcement of the More Doctors Program, published by the Ministry of Health this Tuesday (18), in the Official Gazette, includes the largest number of vacancies for São Paulo, Pará and Rio Grande do Sul.

5,252 vacancies are offered that already existed and were not occupied and 1,000 new vacancies directed to the Legal Amazon.

For the state of São Paulo there are 1,043 vacancies. As for Pará, there are 644, and Rio Grande do Sul, 552.

The Legal Amazon corresponds to 59% of the Brazilian territory and encompasses all eight states: Acre, Amapá, Amazonas, Mato Grosso, Pará, Rondônia, Roraima and Tocantins and part of Maranhão.

At this first moment, the public notice is intended for the municipalities, which must express their interest in the vacancies offered by the Ministry of Health. A new notice will still be released so that physicians can join the program.

According to sources heard by the Sheetamong the reasons for the replacement of vacancies are the lack of public notices for areas where physicians dropped out, in addition to the lack of interest of professionals in certain locations.

Announced on the 20th, the new version of the program foresees the opening of 16,000 vacancies, 6,000 of which in April, financed by the Ministry of Health, and 10,000 by the end of the year, funded by the municipalities.

Created in 2013 under protest from medical organizations, the program was initially marked by episodes of xenophobia against Cubans and became a frequent target of political clashes. Gradually, it also recorded improvement in health indicators and came to be defended mainly by mayors.

Brazilian professionals and exchange students, Brazilians trained abroad and foreigners, may participate in the Mais Médicos public notices. As in the previous format, physicians will not need to revalidate their diploma to work in Brazil.

Brazilian physicians trained in Brazil continue to have preference in the selection. The period of participation in the program is now four years, extendable for an equal period.

During the launch of the program, the Minister of Health, Nísia Trindade, said that Mais Médicos was improved mainly with the objective of guaranteeing the permanence of professionals in the municipalities as long as possible.

“We have had an intense dialogue with the entities that represent doctors, such as the AMB (Brazilian Medical Association) and, in fact, the big point is doctors without registration in Brazil. What we are doing is encouraging doctors to stick to the program . And we are going to work with the Ministry of Education for the records. But the main measure is the incentive for Brazilian doctors”, he said.

Medical entities, such as the AMB (Brazilian Medical Association) have already criticized the program because of the format of hiring professionals without registration in the country.

“We understand that any solution for the provision of physicians […] it should be done with physicians who are registered with their respective state medical councils,” said Fernandes. In the case of Mais Médicos, it is not necessary to revalidate a medical diploma issued by an international institution in Brazil.
