Photovoltaic solar energy already accounts for 15% of the Brazilian energy matrix, according to data from the Brazilian Photovoltaic Solar Energy Association (Absolar) from August. Since 2012, the sector has generated more than R$159 billion in new investments and generated almost 980,000 jobs.

The market expectation is that the number of photovoltaic systems installed in Brazil will continue to grow. The implementation of the fifth generation of mobile internet, 5G, the growth in sales of electric vehicles and the greater ease of purchasing energy storage batteries are some of the factors that could drive this movement.

The vice-president of the Brazilian Photovoltaic Solar Energy Association (Absolar), Bárbara Rubim, explains that the implementation of 5G, for example, generates a greater demand for electrical energy, motivating the search for solar energy by companies.

“Telephony companies will spend between 150 and 180% more electricity with the implementation of 5G, so an increase in an expense, of a cost as significant as electricity, will make these companies look for even more solutions to make this cost cheaper. fixed cost that it has, as representative as that of energy. And then turning to forms such as solar energy is undoubtedly a solution that is already sought by the telephone industries — and tends to intensify even more”,

Another factor that can contribute to the growth of the sector is the greater ease in acquiring energy storage technologies. This generates more flexibility in the use of solar energy, as explained by the vice-president of Absolar, Bárbara Rubim.

“When we combine these technologies we can have more flexibility to make use of this generation that comes from the sun, so flexibility for us to use this energy at the time that is most convenient, such as at night or even at the time when the distributor’s tariff it’s more expensive. Flexibility in installations, we have the possibility of installing in places where the network cannot support that system, the distributor’s network — or even in places where the distributor’s network is not available, or is very precarious”,

he stated.

In addition to looking for companies, many consumers have sought to use alternative energy sources and observed the benefits. This is the case of public employee Paulo Maia, resident of Águas Claras, in the Federal District, who counted on the company É Energia Solar to install the system in his home. His motivation was the search for an alternative source of energy — and the return on investment occurs in the medium and long term, with savings on the electricity bill.

Consumer economics

“The difference is immediate, as soon as it was enabled by the energy company the bill was practically zero, sometimes it costs 1 real, 2 reals. For now, as I have been generating more energy than I consume, my energy bill is practically zero,” he explained.

According to data from Absolar, the states that have the highest distributed generation of solar energy are São Paulo and Minas Gerais, with 13% of installed power, followed by Rio Grande do Sul, with 10%.
