Services sector grows 0.2% in June and reaches 4.7% in the year

The services sector in Brazil had an increase of 0.2% in June, marking the second consecutive increase, according to the Monthly Services Survey (PMS) of the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) released this Thursday (10). The segment represents almost 70% of the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
According to the IBGE, the sector had an advance of 4.7% in the first semester, and accumulates an increase of 6.2% in the last 12 months. Compared to June last year, services grew 4.1%, the 28th consecutive increase.
The survey also pointed out that the service sector is 12.1% above the pre-pandemic level and 1.5% below the historical peak.
Three of the five activities surveyed by the IBGE had the best performances, such as professional, administrative and complementary services (0.8%), services provided to families (1.9%) and information and communication services (0.5%).
The transport segment fell by 0.3% after advancing by 2.2% in the previous month, influenced by management of ports and terminals, passenger air and road transport, and inland cargo navigation.
In the month of June, 16 states had positive results, with São Paulo (0.3%) and Paraná (1.9%) leading the positive impacts, while Rio de Janeiro (-2.4%) had the main negative contribution .
In the annual comparison, four out of five activities expanded in June 2023 compared to the same month last year: transport and mail with the highest growth (4.7%), followed by information and communication (5.6%), professional services, administrative and complementary (3.5%) and services provided to families (5.8%). The sector of other services fell by 1.4%.
