Serrapilheira will allocate R$21 million for research in Brazil – 01/06/2024 – Science

The Serrapilheira Institute has started registration for calls for proposals that, together, will allocate R$21 million to scientists in the country. One of the initiatives is aimed exclusively at black and indigenous scientists with postdoctoral projects in the area of ​​ecology.

Registration for both notices can be made via the institution’s website, until January 25th, at 3pm.

The institute states that 42 people will be selected in the two calls for proposals, which are being carried out in partnership with state research support foundations.

One of the notices is aimed at researchers who have a doctorate and a permanent link with research institutions in Brazil. The bond must have been signed in the last six years — or eight years for women with children.

The idea is to finance proposals in natural sciences, mathematics and computer science, according to Serrapilheira. It is expected that 10 to 30 researchers will be selected, with each receiving between R$200,000 and R$700,000, a resource that will be divided over five years. The existence of additional resources to form and include people from underrepresented groups in teams is also highlighted.

Proficiency in English and being the main author of at least two scientific publications are expected.

The notice for black and indigenous postdocs targets unaffiliated researchers. 12 researchers will be selected who will be able to carry out post-doctoral studies in Mato Grosso do Sul (Fundect), Pará (Fapespa) and Rio de Janeiro (Faperj). Those selected will receive a monthly grant of R$8,000 and R$550,000 to R$800,000 to finance the research for three years, with the possibility of renewal for another two years.

In this case, the doctorate must have been completed between January 2013 and June 2024, again with an additional period of two years for women with children.

The candidate is required to be the main author of at least one scientific publication.
