Videos of the treatment of a severe acne condition went viral on TikTok by showing the step-by-step therapeutic process. One of the publications, for example, has about 1.8 million views. Followers follow progress with enthusiasm, ask about the procedure and give the dimension of how much this inflammatory process affects relationships and self-esteem in adolescence and even in adult life.

The viral treatment was given to a 15-year-old patient by dermatologist Sally Le, an acne specialist who works in Columbia, North Carolina, United States. The doctor talked to the Sheet about the procedures and internet reaction to his videos.

“Helping people to change the problems that make them insecure makes me very happy. This young man, unfortunately, did not find anyone to solve his case and the family came to me as a last hope”, he says.

The patient’s videos draw attention to the large number of lesions on the teenager’s face, which even presents deformations in the nose and swelling in the face. With inflamed blisters superimposed on the cheeks, the condition has a painful appearance.

As the treatment progresses, which is not yet complete, the wounds are reduced to milder acne and scars, a result considered impressive by those who follow.

“Unbelievable!” says one user. “So happy for him,” says another. “Following from the first day, finally”, points out another follower.

The doctor in charge says that she does not usually prescribe oral medications to treat acne and that she prefers to use topical products associated with nutritional education. According to Le, this gives the patient tools to control the problem after the aesthetic treatment.

A teenager’s “skin journey” is the result of an intervention that, at her clinic, Skinlab Estética, lasts an average of 9 to 12 weeks and also requires discipline, as it removes sugar and carbohydrates from the diet.

Procedures include hydration with enzymes, chemical and moisturizing peeling (called “Perfect Derma”), aerolaser and two rounds of “hydrafacial acne”, a technique in which the doctor specializes.

The “hydrafacial” consists of using high pressure water to gently renew the dermal surface. The advantage of the method is that it is not abrasive or irritating, making it suitable for all skin types. The procedure treats acne, reduces the appearance of fine lines and open pores, and helps reduce hyperpigmentation.

The dermatologist also says that it has been interesting to follow the reaction of the public on social networks.

“Everyone has commented, they want to know how it’s done”, he says. “It’s been an opportunity for the clinic to show what it does and it makes me very proud to help people get better.”

Disease is multifactorial

According to dermatologist Anamaria Facina, professor at the Paulista School of Medicine at Unifesp (Federal University of São Paulo), the main factors involved are genetic predisposition, hormonal changes and exacerbated immune response.

“Some diets can worsen the clinical picture. One of the causes is occlusion of the follicles [poros] that can occur, for example, due to the excessive use of occlusive creams”, points out Facina.

The teacher says that most cases begin in adolescence with the formation of comedones, known as “blackheads”, and then disappear with proper treatment. However, some patients may have more intense conditions that can be aggravated by inadequate procedures or by a greater genetic predisposition.

“The more inflammatory the acne, the greater the chance of leaving marks. Early and adequate treatment by a dermatologist can reduce the chances of scars appearing”, points out the Brazilian doctor.

Treatment

In cases of severe acne, like that of the young man at the American clinic, in which nodules and scars form, the professor recommends starting with the treatment of the inflammatory process.

“After the initial control of the disease, the scars are repaired using peelings, laser therapy, subincision, plasma, among other treatments. The appropriate choice of each method will depend on the type of scar. paramount importance,” he says.

Touching injuries without guidance from the dermatologist is not a good idea either. Depending on the stage of acne, scarring worsens, thus increasing the number of procedures needed to correct the skin, in addition to increasing the patient’s emotional distress.
