Beaches are part of Brazil’s collective imagination — there are more than 2,000 along the coast. Many of them, however, are hidden among rocks, dunes, cliffs and rivers, far from the roads and out of reach of most tourists.

In the penultimate chapter of the series of reports on one hundred unmissable places in Brazil, Folha lists ten almost untouched beaches, spread across the country. The list takes into account the beauty of the destinations, the difficulty of access, the quality of the bath and the diversity of attractions that they shelter.

Barra Grande (PI)

Even having the smallest coastline in the country, Piauí hides one of the most beautiful and pleasant beaches in Brazil. Part of the so-called Route of Emotions, a tourist route that passes through Ceará, Piauí and Maranhão, Barra Grande carries the caiçara and unpretentious climate of Jericoacoara from a few decades ago, with sandy streets and a few establishments that only open towards the end of the day . At low tide, walks out to sea provide good moments of contemplation in the midst of natural pools.
The destination is in Cajueiro da Praia; via BR-402, the municipality is 70 km from Parnaíba (PI), where the nearest airport is located

Mundaú (CE)

About 15 km after the famous Flecheiras, on the west coast of Ceará, this village preserves the atmosphere of decades ago and offers a surprising set of attractions. With its back to a dune and surrounded by coral reefs that form beautiful natural pools, the beach is bathed by a very calm and green sea. On the other side of the village, the fresh water from the mouth of the Mundaú river forms a veritable natural amusement park, with catamaran rides, slides on the dunes and cinematographic viewpoints.
Mundaú is 150 km from Fortaleza, via CE-85 and CE-163

Redonda Beach (CE)

Almost in Rio Grande do Norte, the small municipality of Icapuí holds one of the most picturesque landscapes in Ceará. Even far from the city center and without any kind of luxury or excitement, the village of Praia Redonda is located on top of the cliffs. From there you can see the entire stretch of sand, dozens of small fishing boats rocked by the sea waves and the dunes of Ponta Grossa beach, where the sun sets — making a visit to the village a trip not to be forgotten.
A beach is 200 km from Fortaleza, via CE-261, and 20 km from the center of Icapuí

Chickens (RN)

On the equatorial shore of Rio Grande do Norte, far away from the hustle and bustle of Natal, Pipa and São Miguel do Gostoso, a huge peninsula of sand, accessible only by boat or 4×4 vehicles, guards beaches that are still practically untouched. While kitesurfers venture into the open sea, those who prefer calmer waters can bathe in the “river”, which is how the locals refer to the piece of sea that invades the continent. At sunset, a friendly lighthouse on the edge of the sand is the main point of view in the village.
The boats that make the crossing to Galinhos depart from the port of Pratagil, at the end of the RN-402, 170km from Natal

Dunes of Marapé (AL)

About an hour’s drive south of Maceió, the coast of the municipality of Jequiá da Praia provides the few tourists who pass by with different landscapes, such as the mangroves of the Jequiá River and its meeting with the sea, surrounded by coconut trees. A little further north, huge cliffs accompany the strip of sand for kilometers on end, serving as a natural lookout for the blue waters of the sea on the coast of Alagoas.
Jequiá da Praia is about 60 km south of Maceió, via AL-101

Bainema (BA)

A beach with shallow, calm and crystalline waters, surrounded by coconut trees and practically deserted. This is Bainema beach, on the island of Boipeba, one of the jewels of the Bahia coast. The boat trips that go around the island usually go there, but from Moreré beach, a little road of just over 600 meters leads to Bainema. The few campsites and tents that exist are two kilometers ahead, at the other end of the beach, where natural pools of warm water reward hikers’ walks.
Starting point for Bainema, Moreré beach is 4 km from Velha Boipeba, one of the villages on the island, about 160 km from Salvador

Barra do Cahy (BA)

Several beaches around Monte Pascoal, in the south of Bahia, compete with each other for the title of gateway for the Portuguese in Brazil. But the first beach in the country is, officially, Barra do Cahy, in Prado. According to specialists, the “river that flows always reaching the beach” described by Pero Vaz de Caminha is the Queimado river which, meandering through the cliffs covered with coconut trees, forms a paradisiacal freshwater lagoon right behind the strip of sand, until finally empty into the sea.
Main point of access to the beach, the district of Cumuruxatiba, in the municipality of Prado, is about 230 km from Porto Seguro and 110 km from Teixeira de Freitas, where the nearest airports are located

Wild Beaches (RJ)

After reaching Grumari, the last stretch of sand in Rio that can be reached by car, there is a set of five beaches (Inferno, Funda, Meio, Perigoso and Conchas) accessible only by boat or by trails of different levels of difficulty. . They attract adventurers in search of disconnection and isolation, even in the middle of the metropolis. There is also the famous Pedra do Telégrafo, a viewpoint from which you can see the entire coastline of the west zone and, on clear days, even Ilha Grande, in the Costa Verde region of Rio de Janeiro.
The trail to the wild beaches departs from Barra de Guaratiba, which is 20 km after Recreio dos Bandeirantes, in Rio de Janeiro

Brava do Camburi (SP)

A parking lot with no signage, on the side of the Rio-Santos highway, gives access to this penultimate beach on the north coast of São Paulo. It’s less than 500 meters from the road to the sand, but the medium-difficulty trail ends up pushing many people away. For all this, Praia Brava do Camburi, in Ubatuba, is deserted even on weekends and holidays, with the exception of one or two surfers in search of good waves. Be sure to explore the right corner of the beach, where a creek meets the sea.
The parking lot that gives access to the beach is on the BR-101, about 2 km north of the access to Picinguaba. Use GPS.

Lagoinha do Leste (SC)

Isolated in an almost untouched portion of the south of Florianópolis, at the opposite end of the north’s hype, this beach is perhaps the most preserved of the entire island. The shortest trail there is about 2 km long, covered in just over an hour thanks to the very steep terrain. Arriving at the beach, it is possible to bathe both in the sea and in the fresh water that flows into it. And for those who still have the energy, it’s worth going up to the Morro da Coroa viewpoint, which offers a panoramic view of the entire beach.
Starting point for Lagoinha do Leste, Pântano do Sul beach is 27 km from the center of Florianópolis, via SC-406
