At least six units of Fundação Casa (Center for Socio-Educational Assistance to Adolescents) have registered, in recent weeks, cases of young people infected with scabies. The condition has already been treated as an outbreak by public servants of bodies that monitor the functioning of the institution in São Paulo.
Only in the city of São Paulo, cases have already been identified in the Jardim São Luiz, Rio Paraná, Rio Tâmisa and Chiquinha Gonzaga units — the latter also welcomes pregnant women and newborns. There are suspicions that the disease has reached other centers, but the cases are still awaiting confirmation.
According to people heard by the column, reports of contaminated people began about a month and a half ago. The outbreak would have as its origin the lack of sanitary conditions and care with the clothes of the students.
There are also complaints about the delay in medical care: one of the young people who was diagnosed with scabies had to wait about a month for an appointment after starting to feel itchy.
The existence of the scabies outbreak is confirmed by the São Paulo Public Defender’s Office. The body claims that it has already been requesting measures from the Coordination of Health Surveillance (Covisa) of the capital of São Paulo and the Internal Affairs of the Court of Justice of São Paulo that monitors the young people.
Also called scabies, human scabies is highly contagious. It is caused by a mite that lives under the skin and causes lesions and itching when it moves. Its transmission occurs through contact with an infected person or even through contaminated clothing.
In the case of Fundação Casa, the delay in taking measures has generated concern among people who accompany young people, both for the possibility of spreading the contagion and for the prolongation of the suffering of those who are affected by the disease.
Sought by the column, Fundação Casa claims that it identified only 12 cases of human scabies across the state in recent months. The institution also says that the patients received treatment and are doing well, and that the appropriate health measures have already been adopted to prevent new cases.
“The foundation also determined the review of all hygiene and health procedures in the six centers where the cases were registered and initiated a preliminary investigation to clarify all the facts related to these occurrences”, says the institution, in a note.
“The washing of clothes for teenagers in compliance with a socio-educational measure follows a rigorous cleaning process”, completes the foundation, which says it follows the Anvisa (National Health Surveillance Agency) Laundry Clothing Processing Manual.
The Permanent Corregedoria of the Socio-Educational Assistance Programs of the Capital, which is linked to the Court of Justice of São Paulo, says that it has followed the protocols adopted by Fundação Casa to guarantee the control of the disease and the health of the students.
“Among them are medical treatment, daily change of underwear, bed and bath (and cleaning of the same), cleaning of environments and quarantine of infected students”, says the agency, in a note.
