South Korea’s Samsung Electronics has banned employees in its home appliance and mobile phone division from using artificial intelligence services such as ChatGPT, the company said on Tuesday, citing examples of “misuse” of the technology.
Interest in AI-powered chatbots has skyrocketed since the Microsoft-backed launch of ChatGPT in November.
This service has caused a stir for its ability to generate text, music, test answers, and even news articles. But it also raised concerns about the data collection and processing performed by these types of apps.
Large financial firms such as Goldman Sachs have banned or restricted the use of these platforms by their employees. Now South Korea’s Samsung Electronics, the world’s largest producer of memory chips and smartphones, joins that list.
The ban applies to the home appliance and cell phone division, a Samsung representative told AFP.
An internal statement obtained by AFP explains that Samsung is looking at ways to use these AI services in “a safe environment for employees, so that work efficiency can be improved”.
“Until these measures are in place, we temporarily prohibit the use of generative AI services on company-owned computers,” it says.
The statement also urges its employees not to enter work-related information on these platforms via personal computers from outside company premises.
Samsung argues that there have been “cases of misuse” of services such as ChatGPT by its employees, but did not provide further details.
More than 60% of Samsung employees said in an internal survey that there were security risks associated with using these platforms on the company’s devices.
