South Korean cell phone manufacturer Samsung will launch a real-time translation service during calls in 2024, based on artificial intelligence (AI) technology, a company representative told AFP this Friday (10). The company did not say whether Portuguese will be among the languages ​​covered.

The company is the world’s largest smartphone maker, with almost 20% of global sales between July and September, ahead of Apple, according to market monitoring organization Counterpoint.

The real-time translation service will be incorporated into the new Galaxy model, Samsung’s flagship cell phone, which will be launched in early 2024, the company representative said.

This feature will enable “real-time translation of audio and text while callers are online,” this spokesperson said, adding that the number of available languages ​​is yet to be determined.

Translation will be possible even if one of the interlocutors does not use a Samsung phone.

According to the company, speaking to a foreigner using this service will be “as simple as turning on subtitles” on online viewing platforms. Samsung also reported that private conversations will be blocked on devices.

The South Korean company is developing a generative AI model called Samsung Gauss, with language, code and image applications, which is already used by the company’s employees.

The company intends to incorporate this AI system into the rest of its extensive product portfolio in the near future, he added, without providing a timeline and the models that will feature this service.
