Ana Maria de Lourdes Santos, a resident of Piratininga (SP), works with agroecology, a model where different types of food are planted together, as a way to reduce the incidence of pests and diseases. Country people: Dona Lourdes lives off agroecology. Coffee, bananas, cashews, tomatoes, chives and an infinity of greens and vegetables all mixed together. This is the backyard of family farmer Ana Maria de Lourdes Santos, in the municipality of Piratininga, in the interior of SP. Intercropped planting (more than one species on the same plot of land) reduces the incidence of pests and diseases in plants, avoiding the use of pesticides, a product that, by the way, cannot be used in agroecological cultivation. But Dona Lourdes can’t always live that way. Before being settled by the agrarian reform, she and her husband lived working as harvesters for third parties. In one of these harvests, in the cultivation of peppers, it ended up being contaminated with pesticides.
