Investment aims to strengthen the extractive rubber production chain in Amazonas

Manaus (AM) — The investment of R$800,000 from the State Secretariat for Rural Production (Sepror), for the acquisition of approximately 400 rubber tapper kits, announced on Tuesday (27), aims to strengthen the extractive rubber production chain in Amazonas.

“As an executor of public policies, Sepror plans for 2024 to deliver 400 rubber tapper kits. So, this is a way to encourage production and improve this production chain in the state”,

highlights Sepror’s Forest Manager, Márcio Abreu.

The announcement took place during the 2nd Great Meeting of Rubber Tappers of Amazonas. The meeting, which began on Monday (26) and lasted three consecutive days, takes place on Avenida Mandii, in the Industrial District of Manaus, South Zone of Manaus.

The group of participating rubber tappers is made up of representatives from associations in the municipalities of Canutama, Eirunepé, Manicoré, Pauini, Itacoatiara, Novo Airão, Boca do Acre, and other municipalities that are growing in the rubber production chain.

The event is organized by the National Council of Extractive Populations (CNS), Memorial Chico Mendes, WWF-Brazil, Michelin Foundation and rubber producing associations in Amazonas.

According to the general secretary of the National Council of Extractive Populations (CNS), Dione Torquato, the objective of the meeting is to evaluate the 2022/2023 harvest and also think about planning to strengthen this chain in an increasing direction from 2024.

“So, today we have almost 600 families included in the rubber production chain, in several municipalities and the expectation is to expand this participation and consequently increase production”,

highlights Dione.

State support

In 2020 and 2021, to encourage extractive activity and consequently increase the production of natural rubber, Sepror allocated, through a public call notice, 600 rubber tapper kits, to the municipalities of Lábrea, Manicoré, Canutama, Carauari and Itacoatiara .

In 2023, 160 kits were allocated to the municipalities of Boca do Acre, Lábrea, Humaitá and Pauini.

Each kit consists of 400 600 ml mugs/bowls, 400 support spouts, 1 drum-style bucket (container) with a capacity of 10 liters, 1 headlamp and 2 Amazonian bleeding knives (blades) and 1 machete.

Rubber Subsidy

From 2021 to 2023, the Government of Amazonas, through the Amazonas Sustainable Development Agency (ADS), paid the Rubber Subsidy in the amount of R$443,022.00, benefiting, on average, 854 extractivists from eight municipalities. During this period, 278,706 kilos of natural rubber were sold. The action benefited the municipalities of Humaitá, Boca do Acre, Itacoatiara, Manicoré, Pauini, Canutama, Lábrea and Carauari.
