Rocky Mountain spotted fever: Feijoada do Rosa costs at least R$ 750 – 06/15/2023 – Health

Feijoada do Rosa, an event held at Fazenda Santa Margarida, where there were victims of spotted fever, is a party with DJs and an open bar offering food and drink that has been taking place for 22 years, the last ten years being at this farm, located in the district of Joaquim Egídio, in Campinas (SP).

Tickets for this year’s edition, which had an audience of around 3,500 people, cost R$750 in pre-sales and went from R$1,000 in the last batches. The value also includes an abadá.

The event is attended by people from the middle and upper middle classes, and the public pays attention to the production, with photos that later appear in various posts on social networks.

The party held on May 27 was attended by at least four people who had confirmed deaths from Rocky Mountain spotted fever.

Rocky Mountain spotted fever is an infectious disease transmitted by different species of ticks, mainly the star tick. If not discovered in time, the disease can quickly lead to the patient’s death, between the 5th and 15th day after the onset of symptoms.

A bartender who worked at the event says he has symptoms of the disease and says he has not received information from those responsible for the party. He reports that, in the first week after the party, he had a fever, body aches and nausea.

Lucas Eduardo Silva dos Santos, 25, resident of Arujá, in the metropolitan region of São Paulo, said he was hired by beverage brands to work at the party as a freelancer.

“The day after the event I had several rashes all over my body. I thought it was a flea bite. The parking lot the van was parked in was overgrown with weeds so I really thought it was a flea bite and didn’t pay much attention.” , account.

“But it’s that thing, men only go to the hospital when they’re almost dying, so I self-medicated with antibiotics because I really thought it was a flea bite. But as time went by, more eruptions appeared on the hands, feet, and the eruptions began to stand out”, he says.

The symptoms subsided after a few days, but he says he sought medical attention this Tuesday (13) after seeing the repercussions of the couple’s death in the press and on social networks, the first victims of the recent outbreak of spotted fever.

“I went to the doctor and did an exam. The simple blood test showed no variation, but the doctor prescribed me another antibiotic and I’m going back there in a few days, because of the symptoms that still persist.”

He claims that two other people on the team also have symptoms and complains about the lack of information on the part of those responsible for the event.

“I didn’t notice any sign about ticks. We stayed in a parking lot where the weeds were high, there was even a chicken coop nearby. No marks [de bebida]nor the people from the farm, nor the people from Feijoada do Rosa, no one got in touch with anyone.”

The fear caused by deaths due to cases of Rocky Mountain spotted fever has made the public give up on other events in the region.

Giancarlo Pradal, a physiotherapist, resident of São Paulo and a regular at Feijoada do Rosa and other events at Fazenda Santa Margarida, says that friends gave up going to a party at a farm in Indaiatuba, neighboring Campinas, scheduled for the 24th and June 25th.

“The crowd is linking one question to another, tick, another farm, they are afraid”, he says.

He was at Feijoada do Rosa with more than 30 friends, most of them businessmen and liberal professionals between 25 and 50 years old, he says. And he says that access to bush and pasture areas is common.

FARM IS CLOSED

Those responsible for Fazenda Santa Margarida said this Tuesday that seeking ways to make it feasible and structure necessary adaptation measures, the company, by liberality, will remain closed for the next 30 days.

“It is important to highlight again that, in recent years, there has never been any case similar to this one,” he said in a note. Noting that the farm is working on an action plan that should be presented to the competent bodies later this week.

Following the determination of Devisa (Department of Health Surveillance), the farm says that a list of events scheduled for the next six months will be presented, in addition to the precautionary measures determined by the department. These measures include proof of communication to all participants of the events that took place at Fazenda Santa Margarida, between May 26th and June 3rd, informing about health and well-being measures to be adopted in relation to Rocky Mountain spotted fever and, guidelines to look for a health service, if the visitor has shown symptoms of the disease.
