‘Rock star’ of artificial intelligence, Huang joins the pilgrimage to Beijing – 01/06/2023 – Nelson de Sá

In the wake of Elon Musk, Tesla and Twitter, Tim Cook, Apple, and Jack Ma, Alibaba, also “Jensen Huang is on his way to China”, reports Bloomberg.

The CEO of Nvidia spent the week as a “rock star”, in the description of the Financial Times, with the skyrocketing in the valuation of the company, a great beneficiary of the fever of artificial intelligence.

“In the world’s biggest chip market, despite rising tensions between Washington and Beijing,” he is expected to meet executives from, among others, Tencent, Xiaomi, ByteDance and automaker BYD. China accounts for a fifth of revenue for Silicon Valley-based Nvidia.

Huang, a Taiwanese-born American, told the FT days ago that Washington’s restrictions on chip sales to China threaten “enormous damage” to the US itself. “if [a China] cannot buy, they will make it themselves. If we are deprived of the Chinese market, we have no contingency.”

In the statement that most echoed, by geopolitical reading: “There is no other China, there is only one China”.

Musk has just left China, after meeting with the ministers of foreign affairs, trade, industry and the vice-premier, but not Premier Li Qiang, as he wanted. The new Model 3, Tesla’s “first mass sedan”, was also presented at the gigafactory in Shanghai.

It was midnight and he thanked the steel workers for being so late at work. “It warms my heart,” he said, waving his hands at them. “The cars produced here are not just the most efficient productionbut also of the highest quality.”

In Beijing, he spoke out against “decoupling and breaking the chain” of supplies with China, a policy that has been adopted by the US government in the technology sector. He would also have said, according to the CGTN channel, that he will continue to expand business and take advantage of opportunities in the country.

The pilgrimage to China does not only mobilize technology executives. From Starbucks to JP Morgan, the largest American bank, the list of meetings with PC leaders is long, with intermittent coverage also by the Reuters agency.

Jamie Dimon, CEO of the bank, gave an interview and made a statement saying he was in China “for the good times and the bad”. However, he warns that the geopolitical situation is now “much more complex”:

“We didn’t really have that [complexidade] since World War II. I wouldn’t even put the Cold War in that category.”

End of the day and Bloomberg added the CEO of LVMH, Frenchman Bernard Arnault, to the list of businessmen heading to Beijing. He was the richest man in the world until days before, but he was overtaken again by Musk. And “China’s luxury buyers are crucial to the owner of Dior.”

The Japanese Nikkei and the British Financial Times, bought by Nikkei itself in 2015, teamed up to report “Inseparable ties between the US, Europe and Taiwan”, in the title of the first, or “How Taiwan became the indispensable economy”, in the second .

The most impactful statement is from an anonymous technology executive: “If there is military friction with Taiwan, the entire global supply chain will collapse.”
