Web Summit Rio 2023 takes place at Riocentro, in the West Zone, until Thursday (4), and will feature over 100 hours of lectures, masterclasses and networking sessions for participants. The event offers a space for interaction between market professionals, entrepreneurs, influencers, investors and the general public. The opening table, at 4 pm this Monday on the main stage, will have the presence of Ayo Tometi, co-founder of Black Lives Matter; David Vélez, CEO of Nubank; and TV Globo presenter Luciano Huck. (Image from 2022) Disclosure Global impact The first edition of the Web Summit took place in 2009, in Dublin, Ireland, when around 400 people attended the conference. Since then, the technology and innovation event has only grown. After seven editions in Ireland, in 2016, the Web Summit moved to Lisbon, Portugal. It was so successful that in 2018 the Portuguese government announced a partnership with the organizers for ten more editions of the conference in the Portuguese capital. In 2019, the meeting numbers exploded. That year’s edition brought together more than 70,000 people from 150 countries and consolidated the Web Summit as one of the greatest networking and content experiences on the planet. With the Covid pandemic, the in-person event was suspended. The 2020 edition took place remotely, but did not fail to register very expressive numbers. There were more than 100,000 participants on an online platform. The following year, the conference returned to the face-to-face option, but online participation was not ruled out. Web Summit Rio should have around 20,000 people, the 2028 edition could have up to 70,000, according to the SMDEIS survey. Disclosure The 2022 edition broke records again. According to the organizers, more than 2,000 startups from around 100 countries were able to present their ideas to 1,200 investors. The main topics discussed were Artificial Intelligence (AI), the future of work and machine learning, which is the development of algorithms for computer systems to perform tasks without explicit instructions. R$ 1.2 billion in Rio in 6 years For the first time outside of Europe, Web Summit Rio has the potential to inject around R$ 1.2 billion into Rio’s economy over the next six years. This is the estimate of the Municipal Secretariat for Economic Development, Innovation and Simplification of Rio de Janeiro (SMDEIS). After confirming that the 2023 edition will take place in the city, the City of Rio intends to enter into a partnership with the organizers so that the city will host the event until 2028.
