Rio de Janeiro will host the G20 summit meeting in 2024 – 05/09/2023 – Market

Governor Cláudio Castro (PL) announced on Monday night (8) that Rio de Janeiro will host the summit meeting of the G20 heads of state, in November 2024.

“The 20 biggest world economic powers will be gathered and another ten nations will be invited, totaling 30”, he said.

Brazil assumes the presidency of the G20 in December of this year and must have on the agenda of economic priorities the mobilization of resources for sustainable development and the fight against climate change, in addition to debt relief for poor countries.

The rotating presidency of the group is now held by India.

For Castro, the meeting in November 2024 will be a milestone in the history of the state. “Let’s celebrate. The world with its eyes on Rio de Janeiro,” he said on social media.

The mayor of Rio, Eduardo Paes (PSD), also celebrated. “We’re back,” he said. Paes thanked President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT). “Nothing like having a president who likes our city and knows the importance of Rio”.

For Castro, the choice of Rio is the result of efforts to promote the state to the world.

In February of this year, the Minister of Finance, Fernando Haddad (PT), stated in India, at a meeting of G20 Economy Ministers, that the Lula government is working to rebuild Brazil’s international presence.

In a kind of groundwork for Brazil to assume the presidency of the group that brings together the largest global economies, he promised to work in search of understandings based on inclusion and a sustainable future for nations.

“President Lula’s government considers the G20 to be central to strengthening multilateralism,” he said.

Haddad cited global challenges such as the consequences of the pandemic, wars, conflicts, rising poverty, inequalities and clean energy at affordable prices.

According to him, in this scenario, dialogue between the major economies is important, but not enough. “We need actions with concrete results,” he said.
