Rhabdomyolysis: Amazonas has 57 confirmed cases of “black urine disease”

Compatible cases mainly correspond to people residing in Itacoatiara, with 39 confirmed cases
Manaus (AM) – In Amazonas, from January until this Monday (9), 88 cases were reported, 57 of which were compatible, 30 discarded and 1 under investigation. The compatible cases correspond to people residing in: Itacoatiara (39), Manaus (8), Manacapuru (3), Parintins (2), Careiro da Várzea (2), Nova Olinda do Norte (1), Borba (1) and Silves (1). There are no deaths related to the disease.
The Amazonas Health Surveillance Foundation – Dr. Rosemary Costa Pinto (FVS-RCP), linked to the State Department of Health of Amazonas (SES-AM), publishes, weekly, the Epidemiological Report with the scenario of rhabdomyolysis due to the disease Haff disease, also known as “black urine disease”. The FVS-RCP clarifies that the team at the Strategic Information Center for Health Surveillance (Cievs) in Amazonas carries out screening, in partnership with the municipal Epidemiological Surveillance teams, on the identification of cases that meet the definition of a suspected case of compatible rhabdomyolysis with Haff Disease, resulting in 57 compatible cases.

The FVS-RCP highlights that the entire health network, including private and public units, in the capital and interior, is oriented to care for suspected cases of rhabdomyolysis.
About rhabdomyolysis
Rhabdomyolysis is a syndrome that can occur due to various conditions, such as trauma, excessive physical activity and infections, or due to the consumption of alcohol and other drugs. When associated with fish consumption, the syndrome is called Haff disease.
The most frequent signs and symptoms, among compatible cases, are: myalgia, malaise, nausea, muscle weakness, abdominal pain, vomiting and dark urine.
