Religious groups question Citigroup about funding – 04/10/2023 – Panel SA

Religious groups in the United States are pressing Citigroup to review its funding policy for projects that impact indigenous communities.
The group, made up of the Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia and other congregations, asked the company to present a report on the matter to its shareholders.
They claim that Citigroup has a history of funding companies and projects that violate indigenous rights. One of the cases cited is that of Enbridge, a Canadian oil and gas company, criticized by indigenous leaders, according to religious groups.
In the statement about its annual meeting of shareholders, scheduled for later this month, Citigroup said the report would be unnecessary.
According to the company, it is not true that Citi financed a pipeline project mentioned by the group. The bank also says that it analyzes its clients to identify whether operations may pose risks to indigenous communities and areas of high biodiversity.
