Who uses check?

In the age of Pix and machines, there are still people who prefer to pay with the good old check. Total analogue transactions have been falling, but are still in the hundreds of millions a year.

• There were 12.2 million checks cleared in April 2023 alone, according to the Central Bank;
• Last year, there were 202.8 million compensated, down 38% compared to 2021, when compensation totaled 317 million;

Yes but… In financial volumes transacted, the reduction does not occur on the same scale. The drop in the amount paid with checks was 4% from 2021 to 2022.

• Despite fewer transfers being made, the average transaction value has grown.

Who use: Class A and B women aged between 18 and 34 are the main profile, according to a survey by the CNDL (National Confederation of Shopkeepers).

Which explains: the possibility of paying in installments without going through a credit card is one of the reasons given by those who study the market to justify the use of a checkbook.

Another is the fear that a portion of the population still has in making large-value transfers with Pix.

Minority: transactions with signed paper represented only 0.1% of the total transactions made in the country in 2022, according to the Central Bank. Pix leads with 29%. Below come credit cards (19.5%), debit cards (18.4%) and bank slips (7%).

That smoke from the plane

You know that white trail left by planes in the sky? It is the result of a phenomenon called “contrail”, short for “condensed trail”, which occurs when the gases released by aircraft engines freeze, forming ice crystals, seen from afar.

The problem: the contrail has particulate matter and nitrogen oxide as well as pollutants such as sulfur dioxide. Generally, the trail does not include CO2.

• “This condition not only impacts climate, but also air quality and public health,” explains Florian Allroggen, director of climate and aerospace sustainability at MIT.

The aviation industry has difficulty in reducing the degree of pollution generated by burning kerosene. The sector is responsible for about 2.5% of global carbon dioxide emissions, not counting non-carbon effects such as nitrogen oxide and smoke trails.

The promises: airlines have committed to becoming carbon neutral by 2050, but need to further detail plans for other waste generated by flights.

• From 2025, companies operating in Europe will have to map and report their emissions of other pollutants.

Solution? The use of green hydrogen is a bet for the industry, but the deadline for it to become viable is still long.

Discount at the end…

The resources requested by automakers that joined the federal government’s plan to reduce the price of popular cars add up to R$ 300 million, according to a report by Sheet. The amount represents 60% of the available ceiling.

How it works: the government offers tax credits to automakers that sell vehicles with discounts to consumers. Companies can request resources until the limit of R$ 500 million in credit is reached.

Tip of the pencil: Government-sponsored discounts range from R$2,000 to R$8,000 for consumers who buy a car. This represents a reduction of between 1.6% and 11.6% in current values.

Will you extend? Last week, in a ministerial meeting, President Lula would have joked with the vice president, Geraldo Alckmin, who was supposed to warn the Minister of Finance, Fernando Haddad, that they want to extend the incentive.

• Officially, however, the government denies any intentions of extending the measure;
• “He (Lula) made a joke, it is not in the planning to extend the plan”, stated the head of the Civil House, Rui Costa (PT).

Startup of the Week: Intellya

On Mondays, the chart shows an x-ray of a startup that recently announced a fundraising.

The startup: Founded in 2022, Intellya scans various environments on the internet that are combined with AI (artificial intelligence) tools to identify leaks and cyber threats to companies.

In numbers: the company announced last week that it had received a contribution of R$ 7.5 million, which valued it at R$ 25 million.

Who invested: the CEO of Dfense Security, Gabriel Paiva, who will also assume the same role at Intellya.

What problem does it solve: the company claims to have stored more than 1 petabyte of data (about 1 million gigabytes) and to have categorized 15 billion threats from its scanning in environments such as dark web, deep web and surface web (understand the difference of each one in this column by Ronaldo Lemos from 2019).

AI is used to identify false positives in your scans.

The startup also has a “freemium” version (with basic and free functions) for small and medium-sized companies and for individuals.

Why it stands out: after the skyrocketing of ransomware cases (data hijacking with the ransom charge) and other types of digital crimes since the pandemic, cybersecurity has been raised to the ranking of companies’ priorities.

A recent survey by PwC points out that cyber risks are ahead of climate change, geopolitical conflicts and social inequality among the topics that most concern executives of Brazilian companies in the next 12 months.
