The youngest daughter of an American dentist and a housewife of Italian descent, Rita Lee Jones de Carvalho was born on December 31, 1947 in São Paulo. As a teenager, she left the quiet life in the Vila Mariana neighborhood when she was conquered by “this rock and roll guy”. In the late 1960s, she became part of the group Os Mutantes, alongside brothers Arnaldo Baptista and Sérgio Dias.
Rita was a fan of English and North American rock, but she also followed Brazilian musical trends. It was practically a synthesis of Brazilianness and cosmopolitanism, at a time when bossa nova reigned and the electric guitar was frowned upon.
Suddenly, the half-American girl, with red hair and freckles, seemed to have everything to do with the tropicalist movement that was beginning to take shape in the minds of artists like Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil.
“That was very strong for me. I finally got to know my Brazilian side. And that. It’s a mix of everything, I’m a mix of everything. I am more Brazilian than Pelé… Or as much as Pelé… Or as Brazilian as Geraldo Vandré…. My head went nhoooooin…”, said the artist.
The departure of the group Os Mutantes, in the early 1970s, was troubled. “I was expelled from the Mutantes. It was sad. I suffered like chouchou. Then I wrote a letter. And we recorded the record, everything, but I couldn’t sing the song”.
“Kiss baby, too bad you didn’t want me, I didn’t commit suicide by a hair, alas, that’s how I am”, says the lyrics of Mutante.
The artist, however, soon returned to singing accompanied by Banda Tutti Fruti. At this time, in the middle of the dictatorship, her songs were censored and she was even arrested, in 1976, when she was pregnant with her first child.
Absolute success would come in partnership with her husband Roberto de Carvalho. In the 1980s, her albums sold millions of copies, with eternal hits such as Dança Perfume and Baila Comigo, Flagra, Doce Vampiro and many others.
