Project promotes access to culture and leisure for children

Action should benefit more than 300 children from the south of Manaus
Manaus (AM) – Since 2018, the solidarity project ‘Crianças do Guetto’ has been carrying out an extensive and fun program for the children’s audience at Prosamin Gilberto Mestrinho every October 12th, in reference to Children’s Day.
During the event, various recreational activities, cultural presentations, health, aesthetics and citizenship services are promoted, in addition to the donation of toys, clothes and footwear and educational workshops. Among the activities, the movement offers children graffiti workshops, martial arts classes, dance workshops, DJ and maracatu workshops, children’s yoga, tree seedling plantations and lots of games.
This year the project reaches its 6th edition and is part of an independent initiative that takes place through donations and volunteering from community residents and artists from Manaus.
The event takes place at Prosamin Gilberto Menstrinho, located on Avenida Ajuricaba, 1195, Cachoeirinha neighborhood. The program starts at 7:00 am with a football tournament and continues in the morning with more children’s games until 11:00 am. The workshops begin at 2pm and the event continues throughout the afternoon, ending around 6pm with the donation of toys.
The project organization accepts donations until the day of the action. Children’s toys, clothes and shoes in good condition are the most necessary items for the event to happen. In addition, it is possible to donate resources to the solidarity table, a snack served to children and volunteers in the late afternoon.
About the project
The first edition of Crianças do Guetto took place in 2018 and came from rapper and MC Huilame Júnior in partnership with artists from the hip hop movement and residents of the community. The action was created with the aim of promoting art and culture within the community for children and teenagers, especially on Children’s Day.
Since then, the project has held the event on October 12th with the help of many volunteers and various donations. In addition to this day, other programs are created by the project, always envisioning entertainment, leisure and culture for children in the region.
With 6 years of Children of the Ghetto, the organization has already achieved great things inside and outside the community. With partnerships signed with companies and other projects, ranches have already been donated to residents of the region, in addition to environmental education lectures and children’s cinema.
As it is an initiative by an artist from the hip hop movement, in 2021 the Caderno Infantil Crianças do Guetto appeared within the project, which contains drawings by several graffiti artists from Manaus with Amazonian themes, word searches, crosswords and other activities that instigate the intellectual development of children.
This year, the project was awarded by the Ministry of Culture to participate in MICA – Argentine Cultural Industries Market 2023, in which Brazil was the guest of honor. Furthermore, the project will participate in the MIC BR 2023 – Brazilian Creative Industries Market, which should take place in November in Belém do Pará. According to Huilame, being able to show the project at major events brings connections and possibilities for important partnerships to continue strengthening the public target and the hip-hop movement.
