Persisting can do more harm than good. This is what English psychoanalyst Adam Phillips, author of the book “On Giving Up” suggests, released this month — and which should arrive in Brazil in July. In the work, he debates stigmas surrounding the act of giving up and argues that giving less weight to giving up contributes to happiness.

The author is not an absolute advocate of giving up: there are circumstances in which continuing may be the best choice. But he proposes to relax the paradigm that we always need to go all the way with plans, goals and dreams.

Giving up is the theme of a new series of reports from Sheetwhich investigates how this appears in different areas of life.

This Friday’s Breakfast (18) part of the series to discuss what giving up can mean, when it can be a good thing and how this debate relates to increased mental health care. The podcast interviews Bárbara Blum, reporter for Sheet who coordinates reporting on the topic.
