Podcast: the relationship between centrão and government post-change at Caixa – 10/27/2023 – Podcasts

After a ministerial reform in September, the Lula (PT) government changed the presidency of Caixa on Wednesday (26) to expand the centrão’s space in the first tier and serve the president of the Chamber, Arthur Lira (PP-AL). Hours after Carlos Vieira’s appointment, deputies approved the bill that taxes offshore companies and funds belonging to the super-rich.

The government leadership in the Chamber denied a relationship between the two factors, but the text — considered crucial for the Planalto to increase revenue and meet fiscal targets in 2024 — had been dragging on in the House since the end of August.

PP and Republicans gave good votes to the government, but the result does not imply automatic support from the center. A Sheet showed that the bloc still holds the vice-presidency of Caixa and the management of Funasa (National Health Foundation). The government’s rush on the economic agenda should continue to be a bargaining tool for positions and amendments next year, when many parliamentarians are expected to compete in the municipal election.
