Podcast: the crisis in Argentina in an election year – Folha – 03/29/2023 – Podcasts

Argentina begins to prepare for the presidential election in October in a context of economic deterioration that directly impacts everyday life. The country has 43% of the population below the poverty line, 70% of new jobs are informal and there is hyperinflation of more than 100% a year.
The province of Buenos Aires is registering a growth in the number of slums, and the social precariousness demands increasing subsidies from the State – aid in energy and transport consume more than the health and education budget. In the streets, however, consumption and tourism grow, in an apparent paradox.
With a historic drought also hurting the economy, Alberto Fernández’s government is unable to resolve structural problems; in 40 years of democracy, there were nine major crises, which left GDP per capita stagnant. A candidacy for re-election of the current president is practically ruled out, leaving the political scenario even more uncertain.
This Wednesday’s Café da Manhã (29) tells how Argentines feel the economic degradation and analyzes the conduct of the economy in an election year. The reporter from Sheet Fernando Canzian, who was in Buenos Aires, also discusses possible impacts of the crisis on Brazil.
The audio program is published on Spotify, streaming service partner of Sheet in the initiative and which specializes in music, podcast and video. You can listen to the episode by clicking above. To access the application, just register for free.
