The revelation of an accounting shortfall of R$ 20 billion in the balance sheet of Lojas Americanas, last week, generated frenzy among customers, financial market agents and financial institutions.
In less than 72 hours, the company saw its shares sink in the stock market and investors denounced the company in supervisory and control bodies. After revealing the inconsistencies, then-CEO Sergio Rial announced that he was stepping down. He was in office for just nine days.
The company is preparing a request for judicial recovery, but there is still much to be clarified. It is not known how the executives identified the problem and it is also unclear how long the situation was happening. Experts say a hole this size is unlikely to have gone unnoticed.
This Thursday’s Café da Manhã (19) explains the origin of the hole in Americanas, analyzes the consequences of this scandal and discusses whether this case can transform the market to make investors safer. Journalist Joana Cunha, editor of the column Panel SA, participates in the episode.
