Podcast deals with the increase in vape use in Brazil – Folha – 07/17/2023 – Podcasts

The use of electronic cigarettes, also known as vape or pod, has grown in Brazil. Research carried out last year by Ipec (Research and Consulting Intelligence) showed that the number of users jumped from 500,000 in 2018 to 2.1 million in 2022.

Even with the sale and commercialization being prohibited in the country, the item is found in stores, with street vendors and on the internet, for prices ranging from R$ 60 to more than R$ 600. The use of colors and flavors also attracts many young people.

In the world, about 80 nations authorize vaping, and places like the United Kingdom and Sweden have regulated it as a form of policy to reduce the harm caused by smoking. This is one of the tobacco industry’s arguments in defense of the device, along with the thesis that it is less harmful to health and that regulation helps with quality control.

Experts refute these points. Studies indicate that the effects of electronic cigarettes include dependence and cardiovascular and pulmonary diseases, as well as the common one. The WHO (World Health Organization) recommends that regulation be accompanied by efforts to combat smoking.

In this Monday’s episode (17), Café da Manhã talks with Jaqueline Scholz, director of the smoking program at Incor (Heart Institute) at Hospital das Clínicas at USP, about the effects of using electronic cigarettes. She also looks at how public policy can deal with the rise in vaping in Brazil.
