Podcast: 50 Best and restaurant rankings – Folha – 01/12/2023 – Podcasts

Eight Brazilian restaurants are on this year’s list of the Latin American version of the 50 Best, an award that is called by some the Oscars of gastronomy. Casa do Porco, in São Paulo, is the highest placed address in the country in the ranking, in 4th place — at the top of the podium is the Peruvian Maido, followed by the Colombian El Chato and the Argentinean Don Julio.

This selection of the 50 best restaurants in the world has existed since 2002, and later gained regional versions. In the Latin edition, 300 judges — including chefs, journalists, critics and foodies — choose establishments in order of preference, having to include places from countries other than their own in the list.

The award’s methodology is questioned: critics say that the houses lobby to attract jurors and that voters exchange nominations. They also point out the complexity of comparing places with different characteristics. Still, being on the list — and in guides like “Michelin” — is gaining support that can transform the reality of a restaurant.
