After the Brazilian GDP (Gross Domestic Product) grew by 1.9% in the first quarter of 2023, compared to the previous three months, Internet users reacted on social networks with memes, mentions of agribusiness and criticism of the president of the Central Bank, Roberto Campos Neto.
The data were released this Thursday (1st) by the IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics). This is the first result of the indicator in the government of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT).
After the good performance, netizens criticized the president of the Central Bank, Roberto Campos Neto, who, in an attempt to contain prices and anchor expectations for inflation, has been resisting the government’s pressure to lower the Selic, the basic interest rate , which today stands at 13.75% per annum.
At 12:30 pm this Thursday (1), the term “agro” was one of the most commented subjects on Twitter. Some users contrary to the current government celebrated the segment’s performance, which rose by 21.6% and boosted the economy in the first quarter, and mocked the criticisms made to the sector.
One of them even mentioned organic rice from the MST (Movimento dos Trabalhadores Rurais Sem Terra). The product was mentioned by President Lula (PT) in an interview with Jornal Nacional during the election campaign last year. “The MST is the largest producer of organic rice in Brazil”, stated the former president at the time.
The weight of agriculture in the country’s economy is 8%, according to the IBGE. The sector’s advance was the biggest since the fourth quarter of 1996, said the institute.
