One of the great symbols of the Amazon, the pink river dolphin became even more famous around the world when it featured in the winning photo of an international contest. The work of American photographer Kat Zhou took first place in the “Underwater Photographer of the Year 2023”, which highlights underwater images.
The photo with the Brazilian animal won a huge competition. More than 6,000 photographs from 72 countries participated in the competition. The artist named the image ‘Enchanted dolphin’, and praised the pink dolphin’s charm too much “it gave a perfect pose and smile”, said Kat Zhou. In the record, the animal is “smiling” for the photo.
To celebrate, the photographer made a post on Instagram where she took the opportunity to denounce the threat and extinction of the species, citing the famous legend that runs through the Amazonian imagination.
“While locals generally revere these dolphins as legendary creatures with magical powers, if we continue on the current path of environmental destruction in the Amazon, I fear they really will become nothing more than mythical beings,” he stressed in the post.
Still in the post, she states that her work allows her to take a little knowledge about the pink river dolphin, something that is extremely important to her. Even the performance of illegal mining, one of the reasons for the threat of the species, is remembered by Kat.
