A career employee at the State Court of Auditors (TCE-PE), Paulo Câmara holds a degree in economics from the Federal University of Pernambuco (UFPE) and a master’s degree in the same area. Who is Paulo Câmara At the age of 50, Câmara left the Palácio do Campo das Princesas, seat of the government of Pernambuco, at the end of December 2022, after eight years. Taken into politics by “godfather” Eduardo Campos (PSB), who died in 2014, he governed Pernambuco for two consecutive terms. The elections in which he was elected governor were the only ones in which he participated. Prior to that, he was Secretary of Administration (2007–2010), Secretary of Tourism (2010) and Secretary of Finance of Pernambuco (2011–2014) during the administration of then-Governor Eduardo Campos. Paulo is married to judge Ana Luiza Câmara and has two daughters. In the first election for the government of Pernambuco, Câmara replaced João Lyra (PSDB), father of the current governor, Raquel Lyra (PSDB). He won in the first round, defeating former Senator Armando Monteiro Neto as his main opponent, then in the PTB and currently in the PSDB. The 2014 election, Paulo Câmara’s first, was marked by the commotion caused by the death of former governor Eduardo Campos, who had resigned from office to run for President of the Republic. Campos died in a plane crash on August 13, 2014 – when the plane he was traveling in crashed in the municipality of Santos (SP). Pilots and advisors also died in the accident. In his first government, Câmara faced a public security crisis in the state. The Army had to act in Greater Recife, after part of the troops carried out a “standard operation” and reduced activities to press for better wages and working conditions. In 2018, Paulo Câmara again faced Armando Monteiro Neto as his main opponent, winning again in the first round. In his second term, he was one of the organizers of the Northeast Consortium, formed by governors of the region. He was president of this group, which acted mainly during the pandemic of the new coronavirus. 2022 elections and disaffiliation from the PSB In the letter in which he announced his departure from the PSB, the former governor said that the years he spent in government “were challenging, with the successive crises faced by the country and the world, the most serious of all pandemic”. Paulo Câmara also stated that he was fully dedicated to Pernambuco during his two terms as governor and highlighted “advances in all areas of management, especially in education”. In the 2022 elections, Paulo Câmara supported President Lula, although he participated in few events during the course of the campaign. For governor, he supported the PSB candidate, Danilo Cabral, who was left out of the second round of the election. When he delivered the sash to Governor Raquel Lyra, Paulo Câmara ended a 16-year cycle of the PSB – now his former party – at the head of the government of Pernambuco.
